“Killed in action,” was the brief message received by Mrs. Monk concerning her son, Pte. J. Monk, of 75 Ashburnham avenue. Only a few days ago she received a bright, cheery letter from him in which he stated that all was well and no complaints. Pte. Monk was born in Newfoundland 20 years aog and before enlisting was in business with his father as a carpenter. When The Star called this morning, Mrs. Monk was overcome with grief to talk.

Toronto Star. May 2, 1917.
